FINISHED SIZE: Approx. 4" long.

MATERIALS:
Size 0 (2.0 mm) single point needles
Approx. 1/4 oz fingering weight wool in 1 or 2 colors (MC & CC)
A teeny stitch marker (or safety pin, or scrap of yarn)
About 6" of scrap yarn
Blunt "sewing up" needle.

GAUGE: Approx. 8 st and 11 rows per inch. Unless you're making this to fit someone specific, gauge isn't important.

NOTE: You'll need to do Kitchener stitch (grafting) and a provisional (aka open, invisible, temporary) cast on. Instructions for those techniques are not included in this pattern.

ANOTHER NOTE: If you fear tiny gauges, you can use US size 2 needles & sport weight yarn for a slightly larger sock.

TERMINOLOGY:
K: Knit
LH/RH: Left/Right hand (needle)
M1: Make one. Increase by making a half-hitch with the working
yarn on the RH ndl. MC/CC: Main/Contrasting color
Ndl: Needle
P: Purl
RS/WS: Right/Wrong side of work.
SR: Short row. Work to indicated point, slip next st P-wise to RH ndl, bring yarn to front, return st to LH needle, turn work and work back. On next RS row, pick up the wrap and K it together with the st it was wrapped around.
St(s): Stitch(es)

BIG PICTURE: You'll be casting on from cuff to toe along one side "seam", working flat across the top of the foot, then across the bottom of the foot incorporating heel shaping. After the heel shaping is complete, you'll kitchener stitch the cast on loops to the last row of stitches and close up the toe. Done!

DIRECTIONS: TOP OF SOCK
Provisionally cast on 30 sts. using the scrap yarn and MC. This cast on row is called Row 1.
Row 2 (and all WS rows): P to last 6 sts, K to end.
Row 3: K to last 5 sts (5 sts left on LH ndl), SR.
Row 5: K to last 2 sts, SR.
Rows 7, 9, 11: K to end
Row 13: Repeat Row 5
Row 15: Repeat Row 3
Row 17: K to end

BOTTOM OF SOCK
If you want to make the sock all one color, ignore the CC steps and place the heel marker after stitch 17.

Row 19: K15 MC. Drop MC & with CC: K1, M1, K1, place heel marker on RH ndl, K1, M1, K to end.

From this point on, work all MC sts with MC and all CC sts with CC. When you get to the change point, drop the working color and pick up the new color over the dropped color.

Rows 20, 22, 24: P to 1 st before marker, M1, P1, slip marker, P1, M1, P to last 6 sts (remembering to change colors), K to end.
Row 21: K to 1 st before marker, M1, K1, slip marker, K1, M1, K to last 5 sts, SR.
Row 23: K to 1 st before marker, M1, K1, slip marker, K1, M1, K to last 2 sts, SR.
Rows 25 - 30: K the RS rows, P the WS rows..
Row 31: K to 3 sts before marker, K2tog, K1, slip marker, K1, K2tog, K to last 2 sts, SR.
Rows 32, 34, 36: P to 3 sts before marker, P2tog, P1, slip marker, P1, P2tog, P to last 6 sts, K to end.
Row 33: K to 3 sts before marker, K2tog, K1, slip marker, K1, K2tog, K to last 5 sts, SR.
Row 35: K to 3 sts before marker, K2tog, K1, slip marker, K1, K2tog, K to end.
Row 36 (WS) is the last row. Be sure you're back to 30 sts.

FINISHING: Starting at the toe, remove the scrap yarn and slip the resulting loops onto the empty needle. Be sure the loops are all facing the correct way (right-hand "leg" of the st in front of ndl). Break the yarn about 2' from the work, thread through the blunt needle.

Holding the work right side out, Kitchener stitch the cast on loops to the last row loops. At the toe end, take the needle and thread through the knots at the edges of the toe rows and draw closed snugly. Bring the yarn to the inside and weave in the end. Weave in remaining ends, and wash/ block as desired.

Wear with pride! :)
